dc.description.abstract A man sits on a thrown above a myriad of clocks. He holds a clock and a leg bone. This print makes references to Charlemagne and Wilhelm I. Charlemagne (742-814), Carl the Great, King of the Francs from 768-814, unified the West of Europe from 800-814. Friedrich Ludwig of Hohenzollern Wilhelm I (1797-1888) followed his brother in 1861 as King of Prussia. He suppressed the Polish uprising in 1863. In 1864, he led war against Denmark, in 1866 against Austria where he was victorious in the battle of Sadova. Unification of Northern Germany in 1866 and all of Germany in 1870 with the help of Bismarck. War against France in 1870-71 and proclamation of the German Empire in Versailles in 1871, re-enacting the old dream of Charlemagne.
