Abstract:
Provost assumes that the person shown here is not Daumier but rather Philipon. Ramus suggests that the portrait of the artist shown in this print is that of Philipon (and not of Daumier, as one might think when looking at the caption). Vincent correctly observes: "The Daumier addressed is the image of Philipon. By his witty montage Daumier reminded his readers that the Macaire series was a collaboration. Philipon, as we have seen, later gave generous credit to Daumier for Macaire, and here earlier, Daumier gaily reminded the readers of Philipon's important role. Daumier's fairplay not withstanding, posterity remembers mainly the role of the artist. Philipon was the author of all the texts of this series. It should be noted that Daumier did not monogram or sign the prints, presumable because Philipon wanted to document his position as author of the texts and as “inventor” of the series.
