dc.description.abstract Presented here is a digital version of a recording of a phone letter by Lenny Bruce to San Francisco Chronicle jazz writer Ralph J. Gleason in April of 1964. Bruce says he is in Saranac, New York, convalescing (from pleurisy). He jokes that he's still trying to get even with everyone who did their job, referring to the Steve Allen people and to his New York City obscenity trial (the Café au Go Go trial), which is in postponement because of his ailment. He reads from a letter to Steve Allen; it is unclear whether the letter was written by Bruce. The letter makes reference to the group SANE (National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy), to atheism, the devil (during this passage Bruce does an imitation of Lionel Barrymore) and to transgressions of the Ten Commandments. He riffs on the Adam and Eve story. He tells Gleason not to give anything to Max Weiss (of Fantasy Records, the label that puts out Bruce's LPs). He imitates an obsequious showbiz figure and continues reading, possibly from another source, on the subject of booking comedians. He inserts joking comments into these readings. This recording can also be found on file LB_55a.
