dc.description.abstract Presented here is a digital version of a recording of a portion of a Lenny Bruce performance at The Curran Theater in San Francisco on November 19, 1961. The show is in progress. Bruce is reading from a letter a woman sent him; she and her husband ask if he is Leonard Bernstein of San Francisco who worked at Chandler's Shoe Store. He imagines the couple asking him to tell them dirty jokes, and suggests they see Joe E. Lewis, Sophie Tucker, Jack Paar, Charlie Weaver or Arthur Godfrey. He says he doesn't do bits anymore and prefers to cook and free-form it. He starts to tell his fantasy of sending his ex-wife to seduce and entrap Judge Axelrod (the judge in Bruce's San Francisco obscenity trial, in progress at the time of the concert). The recording ends abruptly.
