dc.description.abstract Presented here is a digital version of a recording of a Lenny Bruce performance at the Off Broadway club in San Francisco on August 22, 1964. Bruce makes comments about the man "stuck up there in the booth" (possibly the sound or lighting man) and talks about the jacket he has on, which he says he designed. He does a bit about "chick singers" and how they'll start out be being the lone female fan in a hick town. Then a jazz band from out of town (he makes it the Tex Beneke band) picks her up and she thinks this is her shot at the big time. He then does a bit about how it's a myth that agents can make your career. Much of the rest of the set makes reference to his recent obscenity trial in New York (the Café Au Go Go trial). He does a bit on the history of obscenity law, and on certain words he's used that have been deemed obscene (such as the Yiddish-derived fressing ). There's material from his bit Tits & Ass. He discusses the peace officers who made notes during his Café Au Go Go performances and had to in turn perform them in court, and discusses the judge, who had never seen Bruce perform. He tries to put himself in the place of these men. He relates (or possibly reads) some of Assistant District Attorney Richard Kuh's questioning of witnesses Rev. Daniel Potter and Dr. Ernest Van den Haag. At various points during the set he has interactions with audience members (during which he does impressions of Peter Lorre and Bela Lugosi) and with musicians (a piano player, bassist and drummer) who sometimes accompany his bits. The tape ends during a passage in which the band is playing and Bruce is interacting with an audience member. The audio quality of this recording is poor. The beginning of this set can also be found on file LB_5. en_US
