Abstract:
“Umwelt” is German for "environment," or "surrounding world," and is often used to describe the biological foundations behind how we perceive our environment (as opposed to how it actually exists). It follows that almost all organisms, despite perhaps inhabiting the same physical environment, all perceive their environments differently, and therefore live in different “umwelten.” This piece explores these internal relationships to a sound world, be it the relationships of the players, the relationships of the listeners, or the relationships of certain motivic gestures or musical materials to their sonic surroundings. The materials in the electronic component are completely derived from live processing of the immediate performance, which is an external projection of the internal act of creating one's own perceived environment.
