dc.description.abstract This image shows an ice-skating scene on one of the frozen lakes (fountains) at the Tuileries in Paris. The Palais des Tuileries can be seen in the background. The name of “Jardins des Tuileries” is less prosaic than one might assume. Often the name is translated as the “tulip gardens”, since thousands of tulips blossom there during spring and summer. The word “tuileries”, however, has its roots in the French word “tuiles” or the English word “tiles”. In the not too distant past, the entire area was a rather unsightly excavation pit for mining clay which was then used to make tiles for the Parisian roofs.
