Description:
Jewish Literacy and Education, a compilation of articles that grew out of the 2008
International Conference on Promoting Jewish Literacy in Educational Settings at the
University of Maryland, offers a thoughtful exploration of educating toward literacy in
Jewish education. The strength of this collection is that it engages with general education
literature and includes empirical studies of Jewish education in important and underresearched areas. The weakness of this collection is twofold: first, its conception of
literacy, given the educational context, is limited. Second, the empirical articles do not
always have a sound methodology.
