Mars (Roman god of war) has stopped an Englishman who is traveling to Denmark. Mars tells the man that despite the fact that he may like to travel, he has made a mistake in heading towards Denmark.
This print refers to the war of Prussia and Austria against Denmark who has to give up Silesia and Holstein. England was not in a position to interfere.
MARS also ARES (Roman mythology): God of war and agriculture. Son of Jupiter and Juno. Father of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. Father of Amor. In Daumier's prints Mars is the personification of war threats, especially after 1863, where he is critical about the impending war. |
