dc.description.abstract A coachman demands more money for transporting a passenger's baggage. In 1857, the first meters were installed in the Paris taxis. Apparently, they did not run very reliably. According to research done by Provost, in 1861 the "Compagnie des Petites Voitures" offered a 20'000 francs reward if somebody would come up with a meter which could measure time and distance in combination. en_US
