dc.description.abstract An old lady is handing her daughter a torch while she is on stage. These prints give an insight to scenes behind the stage which were previously unthinkable, thus demystifying in a charming way the image of the actor. Even a Caesar or King Richard is dealing with the little problems of everyday life. As one can see in these prints, Daumier is frequently touched by the poverty, ridicule and dependence of the artist… quite often a Hamlet or Agamemnon will go to bed with just a piece of bread for dinner.
