dc.description Greek, Geometric or Archaic Period, Cyprus, c. 850 – 600 B.C.E. en_US
dc.description Exceptionally fine bi-chrome early Geometric round oinokhoe decorated with simple circular patterns. Each side is painted with a large pattern of four red outer rings enclosing a design of eleven black wheels (each made up of four sub-circles) surrounding three thick rings, within which is the twelfth wheel pattern. The red is restricted to the outer four rings on the sides. The front is illustrated by three of the wheel patterns which appear on the sides above a larger pattern, consisting of a thick ring enclosing a thinner one, which shrinks through blank space to two smaller circles which enclose a single dot. The reverse side, below the handle, depicts the same (latter) pattern but duplicated. The handle is painted black, with a single thick stripe surrounding the bottom of the neck, and two thin stripes encircling the area where the neck gracefully flares into the spout. The piece is in remarkable condition with the exception of occasional paint wear and several dots of possibly foreign pigment. en_US
