Abstract:
In 1853 Turkey declared war on Russia. The Russian navy bombarded the harbor of Sinope. This opened the way to a multinational European war.
France and England declared war on Russia and sent their navy to the Black Sea. The French press was manipulated by the politicians to give the impression that war was inevitable. Fighting began in 1854 and ended with the battle at Sebastopol in 1855, where the French troops were decimated by illnesses and averse weather conditions rather than from fighting.
The end of Sebastopol marked also the end of the Crimean war.
