dc.description.abstract |
Nicolas I, Nicolas Pavlovitch (1796-1855), became Emperor of Russia in 1825 and attempted to obtain the Portuguese Throne in 1833. Nicolas' first problems arose with the Ottoman Sultan in 1849, followed by the Greek question in 1850 and his participation in the Crimean War of 1854 to 1855.
Tsar Nicolas was anxious to preserve the situation of 1815 and he was hostile to the re-establishment of the second French Empire. He was against a strong unified France under a Napoleonic empire. The memories of the wars against Napoleon I were still too vivid. |
