dc.description.abstract A peer from the old regime is visiting two prisoners in their cell. The caption indicates that under the present regime the Court favors bribes. It is the exact opposite of an expression by Pierre Séguier who proclaimed that, in a just system the Court hands out sentences and does not render services ("La Cour rend des arrêts et non pas des services"). Daumier felt the judicial system under Louis-Philippe was totally corrupt. en_US
