Abstract:
Sir William Edward Gladstone (1809-1898) was a liberal British politician who participated in the Paris Peace Conference of 1856. He is considered to be one of the founders of modern European liberalism. He was not successful in his endeavor to free the Republican prisoners on Naples.
Carlo Poërio (1803-1867) was a patriot from Naples, Italy, who was imprisoned by Ferdinand II, King of the two Sicilys, in 1849 and deported to Ireland in 1859. He returned to Italiy in 1860 under Victorio Emmanuele and became Vice-President of the Chamber in 1861.
