dc.description.abstract The new "Falloux" law guaranteed freedom of education and allowed the clerics - in this case the Jesuits - to return and spread their teachings in the schools. This development was supported by Charles Forbes de Thyon, Conte de Montalembert (1810-1870) as well as Louis Veuillot (1813-1883). This print shows Montalembert dressed like a church servant with a gloriole extinguishing the flame of progress and enlightenment. He is accompanied by Veuillot from the "Univers Religieux", a strictly Catholic right-wing newspaper. They are delighted to welcome back three Capuchin friars, representing the past and stagnation. en_US
