dc.description.abstract This series represents an artistic and literary idealization of country life cherished during the 16th and 17th century in Europe. Daumier is glorifying the simple, straightforward and honest shepherd from that period. In some cases however, the shepherd's role is reversed when the gullible and naive Parisian bourgeois is occasionally faced with a rather abrupt and realistic reaction of the idolized shepherd. en_US
