dc.description.abstract A wife wants to buy a hat to bring it back to the country where they live. Her husband is complaining about the price. This series depicts the influx of tourists from abroad and the French provinces who came to Paris to visit the Exposition of 1844. It shows how the merchants of Paris very often took advantage of the helplessness and inexperience of these travelers on their first trip to the capital.

dc.title.alternative THE EXPENSIVE HAT FROM PARIS. It's easy for you to say that this hat will make a riot when we're back in Landerneau.... but 85 Francs is a lot of money, my dear. While you are buying yourself a hat with Marabou-feathers, I am the one who is being plucked.
