dc.description.abstract This print shows a very content and smiling Thiers delivering a basket containing containing a secret fund of 1.2 million francs to the King while France delivers a basket containing 25 million francs in reparation payments to the USA. There were numerous discussions about these secret funds, which seemed to have been used by the King as well as certain politicians for undisclosed expenses. The payment to the USA had to be effected since the Americans insisted on reparation payments caused by the French sea-blockade against English and US ships during Napoléon I government. The Americans threatened to confiscate ships and French properties and investments in the US. As a consequence, the Thiers government decided to pay the 25 million francs in gold to the American Treasury. Each year, the king's birthday was celebrated on the first of May. On this occasion, Daumier shows Thiers smiling and satisfied, leading a sullen France, laden down with taxes, to the king's throne.
